Aromatherapy

Losing hair is upsetting for men and women, regardless of age. We tend to place a lot of emphasis on our appearance, and hair is a very visible aspect of your looks. When it comes to treating hair loss, people seem to go to any length to ensure the problem does not continue. From scary toupees to harsh chemicals to dangerous surgical options, they will try anything. Fortunately, “natural” has recently become part of the hair loss treatment vocabulary, and more people are opting to try natural remedies. Among the many options is aromatherapy. Can this be an effective natural hair loss treatment?

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for healing purposes. You may have heard that smelling lavender will make you sleepy, and eucalyptus can help alleviate congestion. This is aromatherapy at work. Originally used by primitive cultures over six thousands years ago, aromatherapy is thought to have been used by every modern society in some form or another. But what does it have to do with hair loss? A study conducted by Scottish researchers at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary found that aromatherapy helped reverse temporary or stress-related hair loss. This is of interest to those people who are suffering from temporary hair loss caused by childbirth, menopause, illness, medications, and more. Forty-four percent of the patients studied saw significant improvement after using aromatherapy.

Why does aromatherapy work as a natural hair loss treatment? Some essential oils stimulate your scalp and improve circulation, which encourages hair growth. They can also detoxify your scalp, which helps provide a healthy environment in which hair can grow. This is similar in principle to the herbs, vitamins, and minerals that are commonly used to treat hair loss.

How can you use aromatherapy as a natural hair loss treatment? Try the following recipe:

  • Mix three drops each of oils of thyme, rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood. Add one-eighth of a cup each of grapeseed oil and jojoba oil. (All of these should be available at health food stores).
  • Add several drops of your mixture to the affected areas of your scalp each night.
  • Massage into your scalp for three to five minutes and leave in for the night.

You can also try lavender and bay in the following recipe:

  • Mix six drops of lavender and bay with four ounces of soybean, almond, or sesame oil.
  • Massage into your scalp.
  • Leave on for twenty minutes, and then carefully wash off with water.
  • You can also add three drops of bay oil into a palm-full of shampoo to use for every day washings.

To make sure that you are getting every benefit from aromatherapy, you should use it in conjunction with other natural hair loss treatments, such as scalp massage, diet, vitamins, and stress-reduction techniques.

But does it work as a natural hair loss treatment? This is the question that those suffering from hair loss desperately want answered. So far medical data lags behind in proving one way or another its efficacy, but several studies have shown that it is useful as a complimentary treatment in a variety of illness and conditions. When it comes to hair loss specifically, there have not been as many studies.

Does it work? A better question may be “Would it hurt to try?” There are no side effects associated with aromatherapy, and essential oils have been used for centuries. There is no reason not to try this natural hair loss treatment. At the very least, it can help reduce stress, which may be a factor in hair loss.
