Causes of Female Hair Loss

Hair loss has often been thought of as a man’s problem, but there are millions of women who also have a problem with losing hair. Hair loss is especially embarrassing for women and may cause depression and a lack of self confidence and self esteem. With the thought of going bald, many women become very determined to find a way to end the hair loss, but in order to find a hair loss cure, the reason for the hair loss has to be found first.

There are many causes of female hair loss, and finding the reason may not be as difficult as you might think. If you are one of the millions of women who find themselves trying to cover up the thinning hair with a new hair cut or trying to make it look thicker, then you might be a little surprised at all the things that can cause hair loss.

One of the things that many women deal with is PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). With PCOS, women begin to make too much of the male hormone DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). DHT causes hair loss, in women as well as in men. It is rarer for women to have hair loss from DHT, but it does happen.

Another reason many women begin losing hair is sex hormone imbalances. If there is too much of the male hormone testosterone and not enough of the female hormone estrogen, then hair loss may occur.
That’s why many women find themselves losing more hair when they reach menopause, the estrogen level has dropped, causing them to lose hair. If an estrogen supplement is taken, hair loss may end.

Women who are pregnant or have recently had a baby are also more likely to lose their hair. Pregnancy and childbirth both make the hormones fluctuate, and can cause hair loss in great amounts for many women. Once the hormones return to normal, the hair loss should end and hair should grow back.

Another common reason women may lose hair is because of illness and taking medication. Certain illnesses have hair loss as a side effect. Cancer, thyroid disease, liver disease, and lupus are a few of the possibilities. Chemotherapy drugs, antidepressants, blood thinners, and other medications can cause hair loss as a side effect.

Stress is another thing that might cause women to lose hair. Whether emotional stress or physical stress, both of them have the ability to cause hair loss and other physical symptoms. If you have hair loss and have recently had surgery, had a baby, been seriously ill, have been experiencing depression, then you may be having temporary hair loss due to stress. The hair loss should end when your stress level is reduced. If you learn stress relieving techniques, you may be helped by using them.

Another thing that can cause women to go through hair loss is being exposed to too much metal, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. Smoking cigarettes, being exposed through the air, or even having fillings made with certain metals can be too much and cause hair loss.

Once you know why you are losing hair, then you may be able to find a way to end the hair loss and begin growing your hair once again.
