Making Healthy Decisions and Hair Loss

Hair loss may be one thing that you expect to happen to you. After all, if you are a man whose father, brother, grandfather, uncle, or even cousin, has had male pattern baldness, then there’s a good chance that it could happen to you. Male pattern baldness is caused by a male hormone called Dihydrotestosterone, and it is also genetic. If you have a family history of hair loss, then you may be genetically predisposed to it.

There are healthy lifestyle choices that you can make to decrease your chances of losing your hair, even if you are genetically predisposed to it. With the ability to somewhat control your own hair destiny, you may want to keep your hair health in mind throughout life, to make sure that you are making choices that will help prevent hair loss from happening at all, or from getting as bad as it would if you made worse choices.

One thing that may not seem like it would make a difference is smoking. Cigarette smoke puts toxic substances into your blood stream and can actually cause you to lose hair, hormonal problems or not. When you lose hair because of toxins, sometimes that hair will grow back when the toxic substance is removed from your blood stream.

Exposure to other toxins can also cause hair loss. When you are around a toxic substance, breathing it in on a regular basis, it gets into your blood stream and can cause hair loss. One common thing that many people may not think of when it comes to toxins and hair loss is burning wood or coal. When you are regularly exposed to the fumes from burning wood or coal, you are inhaling toxins. This may cause hair loss.

Another thing that may not be so obvious as a having a possibility of causing hair loss are hair care products. Hair dye is one thing that may contain toxins that will actually cause hair to fall out. When you buy hair dye, it is very important to read the label and to know what each ingredient is, and if it might be harmful to you. Quite often there will be coal tar in hair dye and formaldehyde, both of which are known to cause cancer. With the possibility that those ingredients, as well as some of the other ones you might find, could cause hair loss, it might be better to choose a different type of hair dye, if you decide to use one at all.

Another hair product that can cause hair loss is hair permanents. With the ingredients being toxic enough to burn the scalp and cause severe irritation, getting a permanent may have disastrous results for many people. Again, read the label, and make sure there is nothing in the perm that will have a good chance of making you lose hair, or irritating your scalp before using it.

When you are making choices about what you will allow yourself to be exposed to, keeping your overall health, your skin health, and your hair health in mind, will help you make sure you make the healthiest choices and continue to live health to avoid hair loss.
