Male Hair Loss: When There’s a Problem

Most men believe that they will lose their hair as they age and are prepared to deal with the results. This is an unfortunate myth that has been circulating for generations, and needs to be stopped. It is not normal to lose your hair at any age. The most common reason why men lose their hair is due to testosterone being changed into a hormone known as DHT. The DHT settles in the scalp and stops the hair follicles from being able to make new hair, which means that when the old hair falls out (hair has a life span of approximately five to six years), there is no new hair to replace it.

There are some men, however, who are losing their hair not from an excessive amount of DHT, but due to other medical reasons. These reasons are a problem and should be treated by a physician as quickly as possible. Some medical reasons include:

  • Iron deficiency - a deficiency in iron can cause the hair to fall out and to not grow back. This is an easily corrected condition which can be diagnosed with a blood test and solved with iron supplements.
  • Infections - there are a number of infections, including fungal infections and ringworm, which can cause rapid and unexplained hair loss. Those with an infection in their scalp will often find that the skin underneath the hair is scaly and very pink.
  • Thyroid problems - an underactive or an overactive thyroid can cause hair loss problems. If you have been dealing with unexplained weight loss, or gain, in the past year, along with hair loss problems, this could be the cause of your symptoms. The hair can grow back naturally as long as the thyroid condition is treated.

No hair loss is natural, and needs to be checked by a physician to ensure that you do not have a serious medical condition. If the cause of the condition is the common androgenic alopecia, there are a number of natural hair loss treatments that can help you to grow your own hair back.
