Natural Hair Loss Remedy: Spotlight on Saw Palmetto

Look at almost any natural hair loss treatment formula and you’ll find the ingredient saw palmetto. What is saw palmetto? Why is it always found in a hair loss treatment formula? Does it really work?

Saw palmetto is a plant that is also known by its Latin name, serenoa repens. This plant looks much like a small palm tree, except that it only grows to be about six feet high. It is found mainly in the southeastern United States, and can live for hundreds of years. The fruits that are grown from the saw palmetto are high in fatty acids and a molecule known as phytosterols. Phytosterols are used often in medicine and in foods, as it is known to have cholesterol-lowering properties.

The plant has often been used in Europe to help treat enlarged prostate, and has recently been found to help with hair loss. The main cause of premature hair loss is an excessive amount of DHT, and it is believed that saw palmetto inhibits the alpha 5 reductase enzyme, which is necessary for transforming the natural testosterone into DHT.

The majority of natural hair loss remedies that have saw palmetto as their primary active ingredient not only sell well, but also tend to work better for both men and for women. The good thing about this plant is that it is all natural, and has been found to be hypoallergenic and to not react with any other medications that you may be taking. There are some other ingredients that are productive for helping the hair to grow back more rapidly, but when it comes to natural ingredients that are utilized to prevent the hair from falling out, saw palmetto is one of the best and most widely used.
