We forget sometimes that our bodies are like finely tuned machines that need a regular intake of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to perform at our best. We sometimes take overly critical looks at ourselves and decide that we need a complete overhaul, and we need it now. Unfortunately, in a quest to look as good as we can, we might be sabotaging our best feature: our hair.
A recent study links occasional crash dieting and hair loss in women. Since just about every woman can remember once (or twice or ten times) that they have had a crash diet, this study has understandably sent shivers down the spines of women around the world.
The root of the hair loss tie to poor dieting comes from the fact that we often don’t take the care we need to ensure that we are getting all the vitamins and minerals we need when we diet. Before we start dieting, we can be eating a balanced diet that includes whole grains, lean proteins and everything else we need to be the best we can be, but then the next day, we are on a strawberry and liver diet or on a fad diet like Adkins that forbids carbs or other parts of our necessary food intake.
The key here is to always make sure that when you diet, you still eat right. No more fad diets that forbid entire food groups or have us living on one food for weeks at a time. Not only can this wreck our hair, but it can cause a whole host of health problems you don’t even want to think about. Fad dieting is bad for you, period. At the very least, make sure you take multi-vitamins every day when dieting so that your body gets all of the vitamins it needs, even if you are unwilling to eat right. Hair loss in women can be directly linked to what we eat, so watch it.
