For those of you who spend hours in front of the mirror looking at your scalp, wondering what you can do to stop the inevitable, you can take comfort in the fact that men have been doing the exact same thing for as long as anyone can remember.
As far back as ancient Egypt, men have been struggling to find the perfect hair loss cure, and although there are many promising treatments on the market today, the truth of the matter is that the only sure fire cure anyone has found is castration, and most men aren’t quite willing to go that far. So, what have folks used in the past to cure male hair loss? Let’s take a look.
According to popular myths, ancient Egyptians used the blood from a freshly killed bird, along with various body parts from other animals and even a few dates as a sure fire hair tonic. Sound crazy? It is just the tip of the iceberg.
Ancient Greece kept sterling records of just about everything they did, including what they would slather on their scalps in order to keep their hair. One popular recipe used bird droppings mixed with spices, beetroot and even horseradish. While the effects of this mixture are unknown, we have a feeling it stopped most ancient Greeks from having much of a social life.
Old Cleopatra had her own version of a hair tonic that many of her male suitors probably tried out at one time or another. Simply take one ground up mouse and add the teeth of a horse and the marrow from the bones of a deer. Makes perfect sense!
While it is extremely unlikely that any of these mixtures did anything, it does highlight the fact that men have worried about their hair for as long as anyone can remember, and men will likely continue to do so for many millennia to come.
