Hair Loss

Have you ever heard the saying, “Kill two birds with one stone”? Essentially that saying means that you are going to fix two problems with one solution. Many men are so busy in their hair loss prevention routine and fighting prostate disease that they may not realize that the two share a link. That link could make it easier for them to fight both with the same method, rather than separately.

The common link between hair loss and prostate disease is something known as DHT or dihydroxy testosterone. DHT is formed by an interaction between the enzyme 5-alpha reductase and testosterone. The DHT is often what causes the benign enlargement of the prostate as well as hair follicles to fall off. There is a drug that works to reduce the formation of DHT, which in turn works at both fighting prostate disease and hair loss prevention.

This drug is called finasteride. It is marketed as Propecia and Proscar. Both are oral medications that have been approved by the FDA. Propecia and Proscar are prescriptions that must be written out by a doctor. If you take one of these medications then you can “kill two birds with one stone”.

What if you don’t want to take medication, though? Is there another way to fight prostate disease while you work on hair loss prevention also? There might be a way. Studies have now shown that an herb called saw palmetto has the same effects on the body as finasteride. That means that you could potentially use saw palmetto, which is not a medication, as a hair loss prevention method and as a way to fight prostate disease.

There is still more good news about saw palmetto. Women are advised against taking any form of finasteride due to the potential side effects it could have on fetus development and birth defects. However, the saw palmetto may be a good alternative for women who need a hair loss prevention method that is natural and safe to take.

So, men, with saw palmetto or a form of finasteride you might be able to fight two problems at once. These two options may help you to combine your hair loss prevention method with fighting off prostate disease into one easy method.
